THE feats of some of WA’s biggest and strongest men were on display at Muscle Worx in Innaloo on Saturday for the first of two strongman qualifying events, with man-mountain Daniel Macri the strongest of them all.
More than 20 competitors gritted their teeth and heaved their way through various types of lifts in the sixth annual WA Strongman event.
Macri, who was also the event organiser, weighed in at 165kg.
He lifted a 450kg yoke and walked 15m, and deadlifted a personal best 330kg on his way to claiming the rights as WA’s strongest man.
Before the event he said he expected big things from under-105kg competitors Gabor Szivek, who he rates as the most improved, Michael Fingleton and heavyweight David Lawther.
And they did not disappoint, with Fingleton and Szivek finishing first and second respectively, and Lawther second behind Macri in the over-105 division.
Macri achieved fourth place at last year’s Australia’s Strongest Man event.
Ash Guarino edged out James Plumb in the under-90 division, while Antony Cosentino was the strongest under-80 competitor.
The top 10 competitors from qualifying events will earn a spot in the WA state titles, with the top two from that competition going on to contest Australia’s Strongest Man in November.
